Whisky of the month May

Sakhrani
Sakura Edition

Hidden in the dense, subtropical forests of Yanbaru in northern Okinawa, the Sakhrani distillery sits surrounded by a UNESCO-protected ecosystem.

This is an environment where everything seems to slow down, where humidity, temperature, and time behave differently than in Scotland or mainland Japan, and this whisky reflects that.

The water that carries it comes from one of the island’s most pristine natural sources. Soft and clean, almost weightless.

But what really sets Sakhrani apart isn’t just location.

It’s people.

This is a female-led distillery, rooted in five generations of craftsmanship that quietly shapes decisions.

From fermentation to cask selection, there’s a clear intention: respect tradition, but don’t be limited by it.

Because in Okinawa, tradition isn’t static; it evolves, and that’s precisely what Sakhrani does with whisky.

If you look at most whisky regions, there’s a pattern.

Barley, oak, time and repeat.

Sakhrani looked at that formula and asked a simple question:

What if the wood could tell a different story?

Instead of relying solely on traditional oak, they explored indigenous Japanese woods, each bringing its own character and mood:

  • Mizunara (Japanese oak), complex, incense-like, almost mystical

  • Kuri (chestnut), rich, earthy, warming

  • Sakura (cherry), delicate, floral, quietly expressive

It’s not exploration for the sake of standing out but as an attempt to create not just whisky but also capture the essence of Okinawa itself.

And Then Comes Sakura

spring in Japan is fleeting.

A few weeks where everything softens, light, air, cherry blossoms bloom, and just as quickly, they fall. Beautiful, but never permanent.

That idea, that moment, is what Sakhrani tries to capture in the Sakura Edition.

Not an overpowering cask, not a dominant finish.

But a layer.

A whisper of floral sweetness woven into the whisky, complementing rather than competing with the malt.

It doesn’t change the whisky into something else, but it reveals a different side of it.

The result?

A rewarding whisky that makes it the perfect choice for whisky of the month May.

Fleeting beauty of spring
Bold, Floral

Tasting notes

When I open it:

The aroma is fresh and floral, with a distinct cherry blossom leading the way.

Behind that, soft vanilla and a light honey sweetness develop, supported by gentle oak.

Give it a moment, and you might pick up a faint fruitiness, subtle peach, or red berry, adding a touch of brightness.

When I taste it:

Smooth and well-balanced from the first sip.

Floral sweetness carries through, layered with vanilla and light caramel.

Mid-palate brings a mild spice, think white pepper and a hint of cinnamon, while soft fruit notes keep it lively.

The flavours stay delicate, but there’s enough depth to keep them intriguing.

When I swallow it:

Clean and refined.

Floral and sweet notes slowly fade into light oak and a gentle spice.

A subtle dryness appears toward the end, giving it balance and a pleasant, medium-length finish.

Mouthfeel

Silky and slightly creamy.

It has a medium-light body and a soft oiliness that gives it structure.

It coats the palate just enough, without ever becoming heavy, making it an approachable and elegant dram.

Gin.whis notes

This is not a whisky for everyone.

If you’re chasing peat, smoke, or big sherry bombs, this isn’t your bottle.

This is also not your heavy, peat-and-fireplace whisky.

Think lighter. Think refined.

  • Sushi or sashimi

  • Grilled white fish

  • Light desserts (vanilla, almond, white chocolate, red fruit)

  • Or simply, a quiet evening where you want something different

So if you’re curious. If you appreciate nuance over power.

Then this is one of those whiskies that makes you pause.

This Sakura Edition?

It is spring.

Light, elegant, subtle, but with enough depth to keep you coming back for another sip.
